A hook is one of the most powerful punches in boxing. Unlike straight punches, hooks are thrown with your arm bent at about a 90-degree angle, with your knuckles landing in the center of the bag.
What Is A Hook?
We are not throwing big, wild haymakers that miss the bag and leave us frustrated. The key is to stay controlled and accurate.
Power From Your Core
Throwing a good hook isn't about swinging your arm wildly. It's about using your entire body and core to rotate into the punch.
- Your arm stays bent.
- The real work comes from your core and hips turning into the punch.
- This makes your punches more powerful and helps you finish every round strong.
Distance And Foot Position
For hooks, you'll be a bit closer to the bag than you are for straight punches. Stand in your boxing stance with your feet diagonally apart, stay balanced, and be close enough that your hook lands comfortably without reaching.
Practice Drill
- Get into your stance, nice and balanced.
- Bend your arm to about 90 degrees.
- Rotate your hips and core as you swing that L-shaped arm into the bag.
- Think: twist, then tap. Core first, then knuckles.
Keep your movement tight and controlled. Small, sharp hooks beat wild swings every time.
